I found a great quote the other day. “color photographs are about color, black and white is about everything else.” I’m not sure who it’s attributed to. I’ve been playing around with black and white and I’m just not sure which I like better. For example…

In the case of the photos above I really like the the first image but I like it because of the color of the kimono but I find the black and white version more interesting.

In the case of the next two shots, I find them both interesting but there’s nothing in the color shot that isn’t there in the black and white so in this case I wold go for the black and white image. I lose the blue sky background but that’s really all that gets lost in the conversion.

However in the case of the next two, I think switching from color to black and white is more dramatic.

In these two I prefer the color over the black and white because there is more detail to be found in the color version.

Of course this whole thing is rather subjective. I guess it really just depends on the image and how each image works best.

I had seen a whole series of photos in which there were three models. two were male and dressed in underwear and the third model was a nude woman. in every photo the woman was out of focus and I was shocked to find that because she was out of focus it drew more attention to her. So When I posed this shot I thought about that series and decided to try it out. I think it works…

Well it all came out good in the end. I called Sara up and she was available so we scheduled for a sunset shoot which worked out so nicely. I really appreciate her being able to do such a great job on last minute notice.

The shoot itself was great we had more fun this time I think than the last shoot. I had some very specific ideas but shooting with Sara is great because she just gets into these poses that are just gorgeous and I cant help but take more photos of her. A few times I stopped to think about where to put her for the next pose and then I’d look at her and she was already in another great pose. So sometimes the ideas got put on hold in favor of capturing a great moment.

I gotta get to sleep now but I’ll be posting what I learned form this shoot in a few days. For the time being enjoy these shots from today…

Looking back at a few images I saw this one.

This was a shot that I thought was interesting when I took it. but when I looked at a day later I didn’t like it. Now I like it. I don’t know why I’m flip-flopping like this but I think my initial reaction had more to do with the fact that I didn’t get any different angles of this pose. I just got one shot. What this image teaches me is get as many different angles as you can of a particular setup. When I look at it I see an interesting shot from her arm looking down to wards her feet. that might have been interesting. or looking up at her face from her knees. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

I like it now because the background dominates the model. My eyes are drawn to the branches and the leaves rather than the model. Which basically forces you to look at the image differently, to see the whole picture. And that’s why I like it now.
