A great idea

Last week a woman sent me a message asking me I would take semi nude/sensual photos of her. What she was looking for are images that are just for her. Images that will help her better appreciate herself. I’ve gotten several requests like this and usually, it’s a gift for a husband or a boyfriend. In that context, I’ve always been eager to do it because I saw it as a a person wanting to do something nice for another person. Which I see as being a good thing. But this time the request is quite different.

She wants to do this in the interest of self-betterment. Posing nude in order to learn to accept herself for who she is. This can be quite a powerful and profound thing. I am amazed by this because this is something that I’ve believed for quite some time. That through being nude we can learn who we truly are. We get to see ourselves as beings who live on this planet instead of the job we do, or the stuff we own. To remind ourselves that there is more to this life than just eating, sleeping, and working. That there is a whole world out there to enjoy. To have fun, to enjoy, and to see and experience the beauty in that world.

I feel quite honored that she chose me to help her realize this idea and I’m grateful to her for choosing me. I can’t think of a higher compliment than this.

Sunday’s Shoot with Ashleigh

On Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of shooting again with Ashleigh. I met Ashleigh last summer and we had a great time working together then. And of course we had a great time on Sunday as well. Since I had already shot with her with lava rocks and in the woods, I decided that this time Id like to shoot with her on one of my favorite beaches to shoot at. I love the beach because it’s just an open stretch of beach that is usually empty. I also like it because it like a blank canvas. You really have to think about what to do there because at first glance…it’s just a beach. But once you get into the place you start seeing all these things that you might not have noticed before. A stand of trees, or the rocks in the shorebreak. It’s the kind of location that demands creativity but can also be very fun tp play with and just see what you get as well.

On this particular shoot I was mainly looking to reinforce the habits that I had been re-learning. And I slipped a few times but was able to catch myslef each time and set myself straight. For the most part I got good, clean, interesting images. Good compositions, in sharp focus.

Towards the end of the shoot Ashleigh was sitting in the shore break and when I changed my position to get another angle of the pose. I saw an amazing sunset happening right above the mountains behind us. I quickly framed my shot and started shooting. I just about died right then and there. I felt that these were the best images of the day. And I broke my 3 shot rule because it was just gorgeous to see it and shoot it.

I am grateful to Ashleigh for being such a great model and such a beautiful human being.

As I started to go through the shots form the other day, I came across the photo below. Sometimes the shoot goes by so fast that you just can’t remember every shot that you took. So the photo below was one of those shots that I had forgotten about taking and it made my heart skip a beat when I saw it.

Yesterday’s Shoot

I had anoter amazing shoot with the beautiful model Sylvia. We had been trying to figure out how she could shoot with me since she was going to be on Oahu. However the day she was going to be on Oahu was going to be tricky for me to get a shoot together since I’m working two jobs right now. So instead we decided to shoot on Saturday. It turned out to be a much better deal for both of us. This way we could work without trying to cram in two hours worth of work into one hour. I’ll be posting what I learned from this shoot a little later so stay tuned for that…

One of the shots that came out of this shoot give me goose bumps when I look at it. it was completely sontaneous. She just got into this pose and the magic happened. Sometimes it’s just being in the right place at the right time…

The second shot was an idea that stemed from an idea that Sylvia had. Since she was the inspiration for the idea I give her the credit.

Shoot Later Today

The shoot today is one I’ve been working on for a few weeks. I can’t wait. You guys know, I live for this. During a shoot is when all the ideas are put to the test. The anxiety of whether things will work or not is fresh in your mind. Everything hinges on this one moment and that rush is the the feeling of seeing the ideas turn from abstract concepts into the tangible images.

This shoot will especially test me because it’s the first shoot I’m doing where I have a definite idea of where I want to go and how I want things to progress. I have some very specific poses in mind. I just hope that they work. Other shoots Ive done I’ve had a few ideas that I wanted to play with but this time it’s very specific. Partly because the model requested it but also I feel that by giving the shoot more structure I hope to get a more focused shoot and in the end, more time to take better shots. However I will still allow some room to play and just have fun. I have to, otherwise…why do it!

I’ll write about the shoot after we’re done so stay tuned…

Today’s Last minute shoot

Well it all came out good in the end. I called Sara up and she was available so we scheduled for a sunset shoot which worked out so nicely. I really appreciate her being able to do such a great job on last minute notice.

The shoot itself was great we had more fun this time I think than the last shoot. I had some very specific ideas but shooting with Sara is great because she just gets into these poses that are just gorgeous and I cant help but take more photos of her. A few times I stopped to think about where to put her for the next pose and then I’d look at her and she was already in another great pose. So sometimes the ideas got put on hold in favor of capturing a great moment.

I gotta get to sleep now but I’ll be posting what I learned form this shoot in a few days. For the time being enjoy these shots from today…
