New Camera!

After 6 months of debating and hemming and hawing, I did it!  I picked up a 10 megapixel Nikon D80!  It originally came out a year ago and the prices on them finally came down enough that I could afford one.  I have friends who use the camera and just love it!  I haven’t really shot a whole bunch with it yet but I plan to spend the whole weekend shooting in order to get comfortable with working with it.  On Sunday I have a nude shoot so that will be the first nude shoot I do with it.  I can’t wait.

So far, it feels good in my hands.  The viewfinder has some cool features that I really like.   For one, it’s big! And two, there’s a feature that shows you when the image is in focus… very cool feature.  But because the viewfinder is big there’s no problem seeing when you are in focus even with the camera helping you.

The are two things I need to get used with the Nikon, one is the aspect ratio of the images. The narrow side of the images is narrower than the Olympus aspect ratio.  It not a bad thing… just different. The second thing that I’ll need to get over is how quiet the shutter is! It’s quiet! Stealth quiet! I just hope it’s not so quiet that my models can’t hear it. Otherwise they might stay in the same pose all day! I’m joking, obviously, but it’s substantially quiter than the Olympus shutter.

The lens I got for it is a Nikkor 28mm-135mm ƒ3.5-5.6 ED lens.  Its pretty good. In a few months I might need to spring for a better lens but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.  I got some good pics this morning with it and I can’t wait to create some art with it and really put it through it’s paces.

I’ll be writing more about the camera once I put it through my normal routine. We’ll see how it does…
