Lessons Learned…01/17/08
So, it’s been a couple of days and I’ve had a chance to really take a look at the photos from the shoot with Karin. I felt good about this shoot even as we were walking back to the car. I now feel like I am ready to take this to another level. That level being shooting to get specific ideas. Up until now I’ve just been shooting just to shoot. Getting some images under my belt and of course the all elusive thing called “experience”. While I wouldn’t say that I’m a seasoned pro, I feel as though I’m ready to step this up a few notches. But I digress…
The shoot went extremely well. Once we arrived at the location, she pulled out some wardobe pieces that she had brought with her. A couple of thong bikinis, a few sarongs, lingerie, body jewelry, and a red kimono. The items she brought with her we’re great and really gave me lots of ideas to play with. The body jewelry was especially interesting because of the way it picked up the light. Of course the red kimono was a definite hit. It was such a cool piece of clothing and was very adaptable as well.
My goal during this shoot was to shoot with higher f-stops. Don’t worry I’m not going to go into the technical aspects of f-stops and exposure and all that jazz. Suffice to say that at first it felt awkward for me and I kept thinking that the exposures were too dark. I fought the urge to drop the f-stop down and just kept it there. I’m glad that I did because it eventually became clear that this was the way to shoot. By the end I felt good about this technique and of course I think the shots look good so that’s what really matters.
As far as ideas go, I had a few good ones going into the shoot but then we got through them so quickly that I started using the location, the model, and the wardrobe for inspiration. Ultimately the best ideas that came out of the shoot came as a result of the red kimono.
This shoot was different for a number of reasons. This was the first time I had a shoot longer than two hours. I normally do a two hour shoot because I’m afraid of pushing the models to far. I shot 600 images in the three hour shoot. That’s the most I have ever shot in one shoot. The one that might come close is my first shoot with Sylvia coming in at around 430 images. So what does this mean… It’s going to take me a while to go through all 600. But I don’t mind…
Overall the shoot was a lot of fun and it was great to work with such a great model as Karin. Not only was she beautiful but she was also an interesting person and easy to talk with. Like I said in yesterday’s post, I hope I get to work with her again.
