Location Scouting…
Now that christmas is over and the food is in the fridge for leftovers, It’s back to scouting locations for future shoots. This is one part of this project that I love doing because I’m outdoors, in the sunshine(most of the time), exploring this island paradise that I call home. I’m getting to see parts of the island that I would never see otherwise. The thing that makes it difficult here in Hawaii is that there are so many great places that are private property either owned by individuals or by the military. So figuring out who owns what can be tricky. But more important is finding places where I can shoot without getting shot at or chased by dogs. Trust me I got enough of that during my high school years.
I’ve been looking primarily at beach locations because there easy to get to and are what most people think of when they think of Hawaii. Besides why not shoot on the beach since most beaches offer tons of options and ideas for nude photography and they already have beauty built in. My criteria can be pretty tough at times. Sometimes I get lucky and sometimes I really have to go a little further to find a place worth shooting at.
A great location can give us naturally occurring shapes that can be mimicked by the human body or interesting lighting or sometimes just a beautiful place to hang out and enjoy this world that we live in. A place has to inspire me to take the camera out of the bag otherwise it feels like work to try and pull out a shot. As one wise man once said “If you don’t feel it…Don’t do it!” I usually know within a few minutes of being in a place whether it’s a location for me or not.
I’m always on the lookout for an interesting tree or tide pools that just beg to be used in a shoot. But I’m also curious about finding a nice quiet stream or maybe a natural fresh water pool. Or even a shoot in a tropical rainforest might prove to be interesting…
Of course I write all of this from behind a desk and I long for the moment I can be outside exploring and shooting…
